It's Black Friday

Best Buy reported this morning that on the average, 700 people are lined up at their doors when they open early Black Friday Morning. Ironically CNN says that the average shopper will spend $700 in a typical holiday shopping season. We are avid consumers with a sometimes hostile shopping practice.

On Friday, November 28, 2008, Jdimytai Damour, a worker at a Walmart in Valley Stream, New York was trampled to death by shoppers who broke through the store's glass doors minutes before the store's scheduled opening at 5:00 a.m.; a pregnant mother was hospitalized from injuries in the same human "stampede", though early reports of a resultant miscarriage were determined to be in error. On that same day, two people in Palm Desert, California, were shot and killed in a Toys "R" Us store during an argument.

The news media frequently refers to it as the busiest retail shopping day of the year, but this is not always accurate. While it has been one of the busiest days in terms of pedestrian traffic at shopping centers, in terms of actual sales volume, from 1993 through 2001 Black Friday was the fifth to tenth busiest day. In 2002 and 2004, however, it ranked second place, and since 2005, it actually was the busiest retail day.

The day's name originated in Philadelphia, where it originally was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic which would occur on the day after Thanksgiving. Use of the term began by 1966 and began to see broader use outside Philadelphia around 1975. Later an alternative explanation began to be offered: that "Black Friday" indicates the period during which retailers are turning a profit, or "in the black."

It's kind of like the dollar, it only exists because we believe it to be true. Be careful out there!

So, getting ready for Xmas,

last year I got a painting of David Carrodine, but I hung it in the closet...

Happy Thanksgiving!

Celebrate Thanksgiving like your ancestors did. Invite the neighbors over, have a feast, kill them and steal their land.

This year, we're having a stress-free Thanksgiving dinner. I'm stuffing the turkey with Prozac.

I would be a lot more thankful if it was going to be a nice Rib Eye instead of turkey...

Thanksgiving, is that the one where we all ask each other extremely intrusive questions, or is it the -talk to each other like we just won the lottery- holiday?

FOX NEWS: Burglars planning 'home invasions' on unsuspecting Thanksgiving families this year, maybe even one of your family members! I'm hiding a batch of Lil' Smokies in my trunk so I have some after they leave...

AP: National Turkey gets a pardon from execution this week, but will still be indefinitely detained without trial.

I think I am going to try a Cornucopia this year!

A lady was picking through the frozen turkeys at the grocery store, but couldn't find one big enough for her family. She asked the stock boy, "Do these turkeys get any bigger?" The stock boy answered, "No ma'am, they're dead."

I'm having a traditional Thanksgiving this year. I'm dining with a bunch of strangers, giving smallpox to half of them, and slaughtering the rest of them.

My neighbors put their Christmas decorations up early, so I put my Easter stuff out just to one-up them.

You can never recover:

The stone..after the throw. The word..after it's said. The occasion..after it's missed. The time..after it's gone.
